The Origins of Olive Oil

Med Pearls Project

Most models of tourism in the Mediterranean area are based on mass tourism and follow a fragmented vision of the region as a sum of different markets. Med Pearls aims at internationally positioning the Mediterranean as a unique and integral destination to experience the Med lifestyle through SlowTourism (ST), inviting travellers to discover sustainably and responsibly new destinations while taking time to have direct contact with local communities. The project will deliver a set of 26 new ST products created by local Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and ICT enterprises thanks to financial and technical support called Product Development and Innovation Facilities.

Les Garrigues in a Motorhome

Many are the products that Catalonia exports around the globe and there’s no doubt that extra virgin olive oil is one of the most well-known. Travel in your motorhome and learn how this precious “liquid gold” is produced.

Itinerary

All year round

Arrival to the village of L’Albi, where you’ll stay at a charming municipal motorhome site surrounded by pine trees. We recommend going for a stroll through the centre of this lovely village, exploring it at your own pace and doing some shopping at its farmers’ co-op. In the evening, you’ll have dinner at  a restaurant with the seal of quality. Here you’ll get to try local food that’s in season.

Dinner at local restaurant in L’Albi.

This small village is home to the Les Cometes olive oil farm. Drive along dirt and gravel roads for five kilometres until you get to the estate, which is set amidst the valley, right in the heart of nature.

This small family farm that produces premium-quality extra virgin olive oil specialises in biodynamic farming, which is why all its olive oil comes with DEMETER certification.

Time to take a guided tour and discover this biodynamic and organic process. You’ll also learn how DEMETER-certified olive oil is produced and taste the different types of organic olive oils made here. Take as much time as you need and explore the farm’s peaceful surroundings at your own speed. If you wish, you can also enjoy a picnic. The estate’s owners will give you a map and explain the rules to be followed during your stay on their property.

In the morning, you’ll enjoy an exclusive breakfast in the olive grove featuring local products.

Kick back and relax, and enjoy your time here to the fullest. You can buy olive oil directly from the producers in their small shop and go for a stroll or ride a bike (if you have one) before hitting the road again.

Guided tour of the estate and olive oil tasting and breakfast featuring local products at Les Cometes included.

Time to drive along side roads and enjoy the landscape on the way to Els Torms.

Depending on the time of year, at this small family farm – which boasts centenary olive trees recovered from the region – you can enjoy experiences related to olives and oil such as watching how olives are harvested, how these arrive to the olive mill, a workshop on the maceration of table olives or a workshop on how to make oil lamps.

Once you’re in La Granadella, you can take a guided tour of the Olive Oil Museum of Catalonia to see the facilities and original machinery of the oil mill founded in 1920, the best-preserved one in the region.

At the end of the tour, you can buy local products at the La Granadella co-op. Before concluding this trip to discover the origins of olive oil, we recommend exploring the small town on foot. You’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the valley from a restful open-air museum.

Olive oil experience/workshop (depending on the time of year) at the Olicatessen estate and entrance ticket to the Olive Oil Museum of Catalonia included.
