The Practice of Farming

Med Pearls Project

Most models of tourism in the Mediterranean area are based on mass tourism and follow a fragmented vision of the region as a sum of different markets. Med Pearls aims at internationally positioning the Mediterranean as a unique and integral destination to experience the Med lifestyle through SlowTourism (ST), inviting travellers to discover sustainably and responsibly new destinations while taking time to have direct contact with local communities. The project will deliver a set of 26 new ST products created by local Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and ICT enterprises thanks to financial and technical support called Product Development and Innovation Facilities.

Les Garrigues in a Motorhome

Working in the fields is an ancient practice that has evolved over the years. Come and discover how the traditional methods of classic farming have been replaced by current organic and biodynamic farming methods wherein farmers give back to the Earth and maintain the balance and care for the environment’s biodiversity.

Itinerary

All year round

Arrival in the afternoon to the Vinya els Vilars wine estate located in the Arbeca area. Here, we’ll stay at a well-equipped motorhome site amidst vineyards.

Time to enjoy the surroundings, make the most of the time, have a chat with its lovely owners, enjoy the sunset and go for a stroll through this wonderful slice of peace and quiet. There are also cycling routes available.

Gruop presentation breakfast and short briefing on the trip.

Afterwards, we’ll take a tour of the vineyards and winery, after which we’ll get to taste the wines made at this estate.

We recommend paying a visit to the centre of Arbeca to buy local products at the town’s farmers’ co-op. If you wish, you could have dinner at a recommended restaurant bearing the local seal of quality.

At the agreed time, we’ll drive to the village of L’Albi, where we’ll stay at a charming motorhome site surrounded by pine trees. It’s advisable to go for a stroll through the centre of this lovely village to do some shopping at its farmers’ co-op.

In the evening, we’ll have dinner at a restaurant with the seal of quality where we’ll get to try local food that’s in season.

Guided tour of the winery and wine tasting at Vinya Els Vilars and Lunch at local restaurant in L’Albi  included.

We’ll drive along side roads and dirt roads until we get to the Les Cometes estate, nestled in the valley right in the heart of nature.

This is a small family farm that produces premium-quality extra virgin olive oil. It specialises in biodynamic farming, which is why all its olive oil comes with DEMETER certification. They are the only producers in Catalonia with this biodynamic agriculture certification.

Enjoy your time in such a fabulous environment. If you wish, it’s also possible to go on different routes and excursions on the estate. If you wish, you can also enjoy a picnic. The estate’s owners will give you a map and explain the rules to be followed during your stay on their property.

At night, enjoy the starry skies as you’ve never seen them before.

Take a guided tour of the farm and discover what the biodynamic and organic process involves. You’ll also learn how DEMETER-quality olive oil is produced. At the end of the tour, you can taste the different types or organic olive oil made here.

We’ll enjoy an exclusive breakfast in the olive grove featuring local products

Guided tour of the estate and olive oil tasting, and Breakfast featuring local products at Les Cometes  included.

We’ll head south along side roads until reaching the village of La Pobla de Cérvoles, where we’ll have time to visit this small village.

Excursion and tour of the Mas Blanch i Jové winery. Here we’ll find incredible works of contemporary art by Gregorio Iglesias, Esteve Casanoves and Josep Guinovart on display in the open-air museum called Vinya dels Artistes (‘artists’ vineyard’).

The activity in which the entire process of winemaking will be explained through a guided tour of the winery, the vats and barrels, and the bottling line. The tour will end with a wine and olive oil tasting.

Guided tour of the winery and wine and olive oil tasting at Mas Blanch i Jové included.

Enjoy some free time, buy olive oil or wine directly from producers if you neglected to do so the day before.

At the agreed time, we’ll drive along side roads and enjoy the landscape on the way to Els Torms, which is where the Olicatessen olive oil farm is found.

Depending on the time of year, at this small family farm – which boasts centenary olive trees recovered from different parts of the region – we can enjoy experiences related to olives and oil such as watching how olives are harvested, how these arrive to the olive mill, a workshop on the maceration of table olives or a workshop on how to make oil lamps.

We’ll head to the village of Bovera, located within the majestic Bovera Valley where we’ll take a guided tour of the Bovera Valley and lunch. Some areas of this valley are experiencing a reactivation, with the creation of organic products alongside the promotion of the conservation of their agricultural, landscape, natural and cultural heritage.

This way, during the guided tour of the valley, we’ll come across traditional architectural elements that have been restored and get a first-hand look at organic farming and the biodiversity project featuring Catalan donkeys (‘rucs’) in place here.

At the end of the activity, we’ll have lunch.

Olive oil experience/workshop (depending on the time of year) at the Olicatessen estate and Guided tour of the Bovera Valley and lunch included.

A short trip in the motorhome to climb to the top of the valley and take in views of the Bovera Valley. From a lookout point in La Granadella, weather permitting, we’ll be able to see the path that took us to this amazing location on the horizon.

We’ll visit the Olive Oil Museum of Catalonia. This museum interprets ancestral olive oil production facilities such as the ancient oil mill, the best-preserved one in the region. At the end of the tour, you can buy local products at its local co-op.

At the end of the tour, you can continue on your way or stay in town.

Entrance ticket to the Olive Oil Museum of Catalonia included.
